A Life on the Rails
The Memoir of Milton Dale Tyler Jr.

CHAPTER ONE
Mile High Beginnings

Milton Dale Tyler Jr. was born on July 1, 1942, in the bustling city of Denver, Colorado. The Second World War raged overseas, but in the small home of Milton Dale Tyler Sr. and Thelma Cecelia Smith, there was a quiet joy in welcoming their son into the world.

Dale, as he would be called throughout his life, came into a world that was changing fast—steam trains still echoed across the landscape, but the future promised diesel engines, freeways, and soda fountains.

His father, a private in the U.S. Army, instilled in young Dale a sense of duty, discipline, and admiration for machines, especially the powerful locomotives that roared through the heart of Denver. The memory of his mother, Thelma, was non existent, but he imagined in her warm heart and tireless spirit, and he was spot on.

Dale developed a sense of wonder and attentiveness to details—traits unique to his mother--that would later show up in his life and model train layouts with the stories he would lovingly tell about his collection.

CHAPTER TWO
Rails of Childhood

Unfortunately, Dale's mother, Thelma, succumbed to the hardship during the delivery of a second baby. She and the baby died soon after the baby was born. Milton never remarried.

Nevertheless, his boyhood days were filled with the kinds of simple joys that marked mid-century America. He would often ride his bike to the edge of the city where the train tracks curved into the mountains, just to watch the trains thunder by. These special moments—just a boy and a line of locomotives—were sacred.

Like many boys in the post-war era, Dale had a Lionel train set, a gift from his parents one Christmas. But for Dale, this wasn't just a toy. It was the beginning of a lifelong fascination. He spent hours lying on the carpet, watching the miniature engines pull boxcars and cabooses through paper-mâché mountains and cardboard towns. He learned the names of the engines, memorized routes, and studied maps.

CHAPTER THREE
A Man and His Mission

As Dale grew, so did his responsibilities. After finishing school in Denver, he took on various jobs, but it was his long and committed tenure at Pepsi Cola that marked his career. Dale found stability and purpose in his work with the iconic beverage company. For many years, he was a familiar face among his coworkers, known not only for his diligence but for his reliability and kindness.

Pepsi gave Dale more than a job—it gave him a platform to support his hobbies and to start a life. He took pride in what he did and brought the same attention to detail to his job that he brought to his train sets. His colleagues knew they could count on him, and many a lunchtime was spent hearing Dale share stories—not just about trains, but about life, about Denver, and about the things that really mattered.

CHAPTER FOUR
Love and Lydia

Sometime along those early years, Dale met Lydia. She would become his lifelong companion, partner, and best friend. Their marriage was rooted in deep respect, quiet devotion, and mutual understanding. Lydia’s calm spirit complemented Dale’s intense passions, and together, they built a life that was full—of love, of purpose, and of beautiful simplicity.

They made their home in the Denver area, eventually settling in Arvada, a charming suburb nestled between the foothills and the city. Their home was cozy and welcoming, decorated not just with family memories and mementos—but with trains.

CHAPTER FIVE
A World in Miniature

What began as a boy’s hobby became a man’s treasure. Dale’s model train layouts were intricate works of art and expanded into a staggering array of locomotives, rolling stock, track layouts, dioramas, and scenery. He created mountains, bridges, tunnels, and entire towns by hand, each detail carefully considered. His trains ran not just on tracks but through carefully crafted towns, forests, mountains, and switchyards that he built with his own hands.

Visitors were mesmerized. He didn’t just show them the trains—he told the stories behind them. The history of the Denver & Rio Grande, the Santa Fe, or the Burlington Northern came alive in his words. His passion turned history into memory, and memory into legacy. He was happy to talk about trains for hours: the differences between the EMD and Alco engines, the golden era of steam, or how Colorado's narrow gauge lines shaped the West.

He didn't just collect trains—he preserved history. He read books, attended model train shows, watched documentaries, and even volunteered at local rail museums when time allowed. Trains were his joy and his escape, his way of connecting with the past and sharing it with others.

CHAPTER SIX
Sharing the Journey

For Dale, trains weren’t just about engines and tracks. They were about connection. He delighted in letting nieces, nephews, and friends take the controls of his trains, teaching them how to sound the whistle or switch the tracks.
His joy was contagious. Many children who visited Uncle Dale left with their own fascination for trains—an interest planted like seeds that continue to grow.

CHAPTER SEVEN
Steadfast and True

Beneath his hobbies and career was a man of quiet strength. Dale didn’t seek recognition—he simply lived with dedication and steadiness. He supported those around him, carried responsibilities with grace, and remained dependable through life’s changes.

His steady nature was like the trains he loved: always moving forward, always on track.

CHAPTER EIGHT
The Final Station

In retirement, Dale enjoyed slower days with Lydia, surrounded by the things he loved most. His trains still ran, his stories still flowed, and his laughter still filled the room.

On March 29, 2022, Dale peacefully completed his journey. At age 79, he was laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colorado—not far from the tracks that had fascinated him since childhood.

CHAPTER NINE
Remembering Dale

To his family, friends, and colleagues, Dale is remembered for his kindness, his humor, and his unshakable reliability. To train enthusiasts, he is remembered as a fellow traveler—someone who found wonder in every locomotive. To children, he is remembered as the uncle who let them run the trains and told the best stories.
His memory lives on in every shared tale, every model train still running, and every life he touched.

CHAPTER TEN
A Life Well Traveled

Dale did not seek the spotlight, yet his life shines as a beacon of love, passion, and dedication. He lived fully, cherished deeply, and shared generously.

Like a locomotive rolling steadily across the plains, his life’s journey was purposeful, strong, and beautiful. Though his train has reached its final station, his tracks continue—stretching into the hearts of all who knew him.
