1. What Covenants Are


A covenant is a sacred agreement between an individual and God, where God fixes the terms and blessings associated with obedience. Obedience brings blessings, and failure to keep the terms brings consequences.  


2. The Holy Spirit of Promise


Doctrinally, the Holy Spirit of Promise is understood as the Holy Ghost when acting to ratify, approve, and seal ordinances and covenants so they will have effect in the eternities. Without being sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise, ordinances—even if performed by priesthood authority—do not have full eternal validity.  


Specifically, covenants, contracts, and bonds must be sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise to have efficacy after the resurrection. Otherwise, they are not binding beyond this life.  


3. Sealing Power


The sealing power is priesthood authority restored to the earth that allows ordinances (like marriages and baptisms) to be “bound on earth and in heaven.” This authority was restored in the Kirtland Temple and is integral to making covenants eternally valid.  


4. Covenant People


Those who faithfully keep covenants become a covenant people—a community bound to God’s promises. Their faithful obedience and reception of divine promises characterizes their identity and ultimate spiritual destiny.  


5. Resurrection and Eternal Efficacy


Ordinances and covenants that are rightly sealed by authorized priesthood and by the Holy Spirit of Promise are understood to continue in force after death and through the resurrection. Without such seals, they lack eternal force.
