Tributes to grandpa stucki

My parents were largely responsible for taking us to visit our grandparents regularly when we were children. Grandpa and Grandma would also come visit us often at our house in Salt Lake City. We had to be on our best behavior during their stay.

When I was a small boy, I didn’t really have the capacity to sit and socialize for a long time. I would get restless when visiting. There were so many trinkets and other nice things in my grandparents’ home. I wasn’t allowed to play rough or even touch those dainty little treasures.

Of course, I didn’t realize it at the time, but my grandpa knew we didn’t like to just sit and talk, so at some point during our visit, he would invite the boys to go out to the green and hit golf balls on the communal putting range. I loved that. Other times, he would take us to the Shuffleboard courts. We would use the long cues to slide the discs along the court. That was fun too. It must have been a chore for grandpa, but it was amusing for the children, and grandpa wanted us to have a good timee.

We had a large family. I was one of eight children. My cousins’ families were large, too. But that didn’t deter my grandfather and mother from spending time with us and always remembering us on our birthdays. In fact, I grew up knowing that when I turned 12-years-old and received the priesthood, Grandpa would take me out to dinner to my favorite restaurant at the time—Chuck-or-Rama. I guess it was a little awkward for me because I was only 12 at the time, but I always remembered and appreciated my grandfather for doing that for me.

My grandpa was quite a bit older than my grandma, so he died significantly earlier than she did. I learned as a man that when my grandpa was a young man, he was a cowboy who rode horses, wrestled cattle, and accomplished things that I had no idea he had done. I admire him now for all those things he did. I wish I had the presence of mind to ask about those when I could have, instead of learning about them this many years later.

I also found out as a man that my Grandpa Stucki was the one who translated my great-grandfather’s treasured journal (the little red book, as we called it) from German to English. I hd no idea my grandpa was fluent in German back in those days.

There were a lot af really great things about my grandfather.

I am grateful for him every day.
