memoir for ernie faust
In Hill City Minnesota when 12, Ernie drove four head of horses from camp to the mill and back to the camp with a load of logs. He made double wages that way. There were 15 other men with four head of horses each all of which took one day down and one day back.
When he was disobedient, 3 boys would hold him while his dad paddled him. He didn't like it. He ran off at age 12 and joined the last of the log drives down the Mississippi River. He went West when soon after he turned 13. He was big and tough for a kid that age.
In North Dakota he was a farm hand. Then in Montana a cowpoke (eg cowboy). It was then the he started rodeo.
In 1934, his boss sent him with a car load of cattle to St Paul, MN. Nobody would even bid on the cattle, so he called his boss who told him to take them to Chicago to get rid of them. He sold them for $3.00 a head. Farmers had cattle they couldn't feed and a lot of strays. The government would round them all up and turn them loose in the woods in Minnesota.
A butcher came to Ernie's dad to buy beef. His dad wouldn't sell his. So someone killed government beef and got $30 a head, 10 head a day, legs and head off and hide on, but guts out (eg country killed). Butcher came 5 AM daily to pick them up hanging on hay track in the barn. This was the last time Ernie was back in Minnesota. He went west again, all over the West, with two or three fellows, wandering some.
Ernie came to Castle Valley same year as Slamas, who came arrived later that year. He harvested a big tomato crop that same year. He was married twice and has two children, both girls Lois and Becky. Ernie has two grandchildren, a girl Annette and a boy Billy
Joined the church same Spring and moved here shortly after. He was living with the man and his family we bought the church lot from.
