What we decided to do... December 25, 2016
Dear Sweetheart, Mother, and Gramma, This Christmas will always be a memorable. What more could we ask than to have the gift our family together during this special time. We did nothing remarkable to deserve the abundance of blessings in our lives. Camilla said it best when she wrote about parenthood “under qualified and over paid.” That’s true for child rearing, and it’s true for life. I still get chills when I listen to the score from the Tony Award winning musical Wicked: the music, the voices, and the thrill of being in Gershwin Theatre in New York City or the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. The performance of the Broadway sensations Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth is something I will never forget. Since its 2003 debut, Wicked has broken box office expectations around the world, currently holding weekly-gross-takings records in Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London. In the week ending January 2, 2011, the London, Broadway, and both North American touring productions simultaneously broke their respective records for the highest weekly gross. In the final week of 2013, the Broadway production broke highs again, earning $3.2 million. The show has been seen by millions of patrons. So why is there such interest in this world-wide sensation? There are lots of reasons: the story, score, and popular songs. For me, it’s the feeling I get at the climax of the show, which actually happens several times throughout the production. At that moment, you may want to stand and applaud enthusiastically. It is a really great feeling. But as remarkable as that experience is, one doesn’t have to travel to Broadway to feel that emotion. I get that feeling every day when I walk into our home and feel the love, warmth and family togetherness you make possible for me and all of the children. What you have done building our family and home far exceeds my expectations or what I feel I will ever accomplish in this life. One thing I have that will never be surpassed is you and our family together. And that really makes me want to sing. I love you Linda! Mathew
